If
someone has suggested to you or a loved one that you
consider hospice we want you to know hospice care is
not about giving up. It is about living life to the
fullest extent possible. It's about having the quality
of life you desire. Maybe it's been suggested you seek
hospice care because someone, possibly a physician,
has told you nothing more can be done. That's simply
not true.
Keep
in mind hospice care is a type of treatment. It's not
a curative treatment but it's a kind of treatment which
helps deal with the symptoms of an illness or disease.
A great deal is done for the person who receives hospice
care. Our team of healthcare professionals, which includes
a physician, nurse, social worker, aide, chaplain and
volunteer, surrounds the person and his or her family
with compassion, hope, and excellent medical care. We
work together with each person and family to assure
the person receives the kind care which is desired.
We do the best we can at helping the person remain as
independent and alert as possible to accomplish life's
goals. It's important to us to care for the whole person,
paying attention to physical, emotional, and spiritual
needs; we do so because each are important to living
life.
The
other thing to remember about hospice care is it provides
excellent support for a person's family. It's extremely
difficult to be the loved one or caregiver for someone
with a life-limiting illness. Hospice care lightens
the burden for family and friends. It is not unusual
for families to tell us that prior to receiving hospice
care managing a loved one's illness was very difficult.
Making sure their loved ones were bathed and fed, managing
medication, and communicating with the doctor was complicated
and sometimes overwhelming. When hospice care was chosen,
caring for a loved one stopped being a burden and became
an opportunity to share life in a meaningful way. Almost
all our patients and their families tell us they wish
they had chosen hospice care earlier than they did.
All
of us at Hospice Brazos Valley know the decision to
choose hospice care is difficult and is never taken
lightly. If we can help in your decision making process,
call us and we'll schedule a visit to share more information
about our services
and the care we provide. It would be an honor to
talk with you personally. If you decide to invite us
into your life to provide care, please know that we
will consider your invitation a sacred trust. We'll
respond to that trust with compassionate and hope-filled
care.
